Here I sit, more or less safe and secure in my downwardly mobile apartment in a questionable fringe neighborhood of Long Beach. But I have easy access to school, stores, books and the climate is temperate, a nice breeze blowing up from the ocean to the south, keeping the desert heat at bay, at least for those of us within a few miles of the Pacific, life could be called balmy on this Fourth Of July, Two Thousand and Thirteen. But all is not well in Mudville, for today the American Casey has struck out in a struggle to preserve the security of the nation from such incorrigible enemies as young Snowden, a regular sorrowful Werther wandering the world seeking a home. This mere mouse, has turned out to be a lion. His revelations, and the brazen actions of the US in attempting to thwart those who might help, such as President Morales of Bolivia. has disturbed the veils covering the naked power of the United States. The display of the Moloch like force that acts to devour the flower of our worlds idealistic youth with its ever present need for security and silent acquiescence at all costs has again driven home the need to preserve our liberties in the face of this overweening force.
“I am proud of my heart alone, it is the sole source of everything, all our strength, happiness & misery. All the knowledge I possess everyone else can acquire, but my heart is all my own”
― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, The Sorrows of Young Werther
I want to write to you dear reader a bit about Snowden, the reach of American Power, and the neocolonial status of the Latin American states such as Bolivia, whose president was detained and treated as a common criminal suspect in Vienna, Austria when the rumor got out that President Morales just might have whistle blower Snowden on his diplomatic flight, returning from a conference in Moscow to Bolivia. His plane was refused entry into French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian air space. Essentially blocking the flight path home. Forced to land in Vienna, his plane searched supposedly by the Spanish and Austrian authorities and detained for 14 hours, all with no evidence, or legal justification, as Presidential flights have diplomatic immunity. The USA officially denies any involvement, but on what other basis would several supposedly independent European nations be willing to cause an international incident over a political refugee? Only the USA carries this kind of clout in the world. Some back channel communications must have happened for this unprecedented action. Certainly it belies President Obama’s previous statement that he was not going to scramble jets to go after one lone hacker. But when you look at the wording, it is precisely correct. Obama didn’t have to scramble jets, and as he said, he did work through other channels. Legal or not power is power and the display of a president of a sovereign nation at the mercy of unnamed forces for unverified reasons, is witness enough. The Monroe Doctrine, it seems has been transformed, not only to keep European hands off Western Hemispheric states, but now to keep Western Hemispheric states in line. US hegemony over the Americas, seems to extend to central Europe and beyond.
The calling in of favors, shows the determination that the US has to eliminate Snowden, and warn all comers that to touch upon an American interest, even in passing as Morales did in his RT interview in which he stated he would have no problem giving asylum to Snowden. Well considering the consequences, he did have a problem, and all of Latin America has joined in the chorus of those having a problem with what happened. Morales upon his return to Bolivia is quoted below in a Reuters article states:
“This was an open provocation toward a continent, not just a president,” said Morales, his hair strewn with flower petals thrown by people in traditional Andean garb. “North American imperialism uses its people to terrify and intimidate us. I just want to say they will never frighten us because we are a people of dignity and sovereignty.”
Clearly Snowden is not small potatoes if the USA is willing to cause such a row merely upon the rumor of his being on a flight. It is also a clear warning for anyone considering giving asylum to Snowden that the USA is prepared to take extraordinary measures to insure his return to the USA for trial. This is certainly more than a case of a trivial hacker and Obama has become one of the kings of the dissemblers, saying one thing and clearly doing another. As the IPS News story indicates the US is willing to go to great lengths to suppress any dissent that it considers to be a threat, Snowden has become a real life Mouse that Roared. We can only hope that the blowback from the heavy handed efforts of the US government and its minions will be trumped by the clarion call to freedom that men like Snowden represent.
