Earth First! Environmental Action Oregon Rising Tide
Yesterday (7/8) a group of Cascadia Earth First!ers and Rising Tide members took action against the continued liquidation and destruction of Oregon’s Elliot State Forest. A road block was put into place. This morning the free state was raided by 60+ cops.
A group of Cascadia Earth First!ers and Rising Tide members took action against the continued liquidation and destruction of Oregon’s Elliot State Forest. Using sky pods, bipods, road blockades, overturned cargo vans, lock downs and many other beautiful installations, the road to Umpcoos Ridge timber sale has been occupied, held and reclaimed for
the forest, the people and future generations.

The block was raided by cops who came equipped with bulldozers etc.
22 protesters are being held at the Douglas County jail in Roseburg, Oregon. Protesters on the outside of the blockade have been forced 5 miles away from the blockade. It is highly likely, based on screams that police are using PAIN COMPLIANCE on the locked down protesters.

As more info as to how people can show solidarity arises word will be put up…for more info http://www.forestdefensenow.org/

The G-8 has decided that they cannot make the move to limit green house gas emissions. The developing nations want the Developed nations give financial aid in helping them make the transition. The developed nations want the developing nations to commit to limits. Both groups are waiting for the other side to make the first move and neither side is willing to be seen at a disadvantage. It may mean that sooner than later we will all pay for the cowardice and greed of a few politicians.
The G-8 countries aggreed to reductions in 40 years. China and India would not agree without financial guarantees. So essentially nothing.
In a related move the US Senate remained true to course and put off dealing with climate change legislation until September. Almost guaranteeing that there will be no legislation passed by the time of the Copenhagen Conference unless Obama makes it a top priority.

The western countries were not able to get more sanctions against Iran because of Russia and China blocking according to Washington Week on NPR.

Today there was talk of making Africa self sufficient in food production at the G-8 Conference. President Obama seems to want to push that issue and the host, Italy was embarrassed when it was brought up that Italy had reneged on its promise of aid to Africa.

Obama is now in Ghana and the people there are excited about his visit. He is set to visit an old slave trade fort and meet with the president of the country and to focus on how it is an example of a successful democracy in Africa. Recently Oil has been discovered off shore there and the administration may be attempting to move the African Command from Germany to Ghana. That area of Africa has vast oil reserves that are threatened by local resistance groups particularly in the Nigerian delta where there are negotiations between rebels and the government at this time. Nigerian oil production is down 1/3rd because of rebels blowing up the pipelines. This from KPFK, the BBC and NPR.
Obama went to see the pope before heading out to Ghana.

Uighurs went to Mosques today to Friday prayers. Many of them had been closed by the Chinese government. Members of Congress want the President to do something as reported by Voice of America.

“Congressman Dana Rohrabacher Republican of California and William Delahunt Democrat of Massachusetts also reiterated their anger at U.S. military authorities for allowing Chinese intelligence officials to interrogate Uighur detainees at the U.S. naval detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 2002.”

No agreement has been made in Honduras and conservatives in the USA are calling the coup not a coup according to FSRN on KPFK.

According to the BBC “Ousted President Manuel Zelaya and interim leader Roberto Micheletti had refused to meet but held separate talks with Costa Rican President Oscar Arias.
Correspondents say the former allies’ positions remain far apart.
Mr Zelaya, who was removed from Honduras at gun point in a coup last month, continues to describe Mr Micheletti as a criminal, while Mr Micheletti’s interim government has said Mr Zelaya will be arrested if he tries to return to the country.
Both men left the talks on Thursday, leaving delegations behind to continue the discussions.”

8 British and 7 American soldiers died in Afghanistan this week. That is quite an increase.
This from the BBC

“Five more UK dead in Afghanistan

Fifteen UK soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan in the last 10 days
Five more British soldiers have died in Afghanistan, bringing to eight the total killed over 24 hours, the Ministry of Defence has said.
The five, from the 2nd Battalion The Rifles, were killed in two separate blasts while on foot patrol on Friday. Next of kin have been informed.
Their deaths take the number killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 184 - more than those killed in the Iraq war.
Earlier, the MoD announced the deaths of three other soldiers in Helmand.”

War all across the planet war and news of war. As the Earth gets more crowded and the pressure is on for change to come, the forces in power do their best to put a lid on it. But the people of the world are less and less willing to simply put up with the crap. Change has got to come.

Healthcare and Climate change legislation both crapped out in Congress. I wonder if they are capable of making much of anything happen.
