Tell Me World

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

What do you care about? I don’t know any more. I used to care about family, about the future of the world. Now I am simply existing between caring moments. I read “A Thousand Plateaus - Capitalism and Schizophrenia” by Deleuze and Guattari. I ended up reading it in bits and pieces over the course of 3 or 4 years and it bored me mostly. It occasionally confused me, often was a meaningless exercise in materialist renderings of reality. Once in a while there would be a flight of poetry or a metaphor that made some sense. It was an attempt to create a rhizomic world view with a particular feeling for the Dutch Jewish philosopher Spinoza.
There is nothing other than the refrain on their minds, the refrain of the sound of wonder that comes from the fans who in incomprehension, gasp and act as if they are awe struck when in reality they are merely misinterpreting complexity for genius. I am not so easily impressed.

One hundred years of solitude, or a thousand years since the last millennium, or perhaps there are the others. Christ came and went 2 millennium ago and still there are those who wait for his return.
What can one expect in a world where we are left to be criminals when were are not slaves. I tried to find out if there was another way out. One can be an academic and write nonsense, petty detailed factoids that help keep the system going but do not bring about the changes we require. Clever men and women get paid to come up with commercials that entice, and products that ensnare and financial services that only help to make the rich richer.
The average person, the working citizen, the not too bright, try to imitate the wealthy, they follow the model they have been shown because there no longer is anything else. There is no longer culture in this country. There is the corruption of money and the desire to have more. The legitimate methods of organizing labor and fighting for rights and advancement has been undermined. Unions are corrupt or they are like the IWW, powerless. Capitalists are either corrupt or struggling. Academics are either shills for power or they are outcasts.
I am one who decided a long time ago not to play along. I tried to be an academic without a degree, I study and read and think and it gets me nowhere. I watch the world go from conservative to liberal but it stays the same. I still have a crappy job and debt up my ass. Capitalism hasn’t changed. I simply have to watch a different set of liars.
I believed in human solidarity. I believed that there was a way for us to work out of this mess of profit and loss and come up with a solution that was equitable for all of humanity. But most of humanity is too busy trying to get rich, to become like the few who have it all. Only in parts of the world where the capitalist madness has not penetrated are the people still living lives that are relativly human. But where is that now? No place in this earth. Isolated reserves for indigenous peoples. places too poor for Television and places where capital hs not yet reached like North Korea and what kind of a life can people have who are living in opposition to the rest of the world that has accepted the rule of capital. They will be starved in the name of free trade.
I join demonstrations to stop the oppression of the people in Gaza. I rail against the lies told about the people in Iran. I lament the loss of an opposition to Capital that is based on human equality. It is a sad day when there only opposition is that which comes from the followers of Islam.
I am going to study that religion. See if there is something there that stands for the dignity of humanity against the mega machine or if it is merely the opposition of a backward looking clique of fundamentalists. I am in favor of a just and fair world based on human values not on pie in the sky or a cult of the dead. But as the saying goes the enemy of my enemy is my friend. lets see if there is any depth to this friendship.
